Dyson’s second pair of over-ear headphones have been revealed
Dyson has announced its second pair of headphones and this time, the company has decided to ditch the filtration system across the front of your face. Thank god.
The Dyson OnTrac headphones follow in the footsteps of the Dyson Zone that launched back in 2022, but rather than hoping to filter the air around you like the Dyson Zone set out to do – and Dyson fans of course offer – the OnTrac headphones are all about sound performance and customisation.
Opting for an industrial design – much like the rest of Dyson’s smart home portfolio, the OnTrac headphones come in four main colours including CNC Copper, CNC Aluminium, Ceramic Cinnabar and CNC Black Nickel. There are seven different coloured ear cushions however, along with seven ear caps, all of which are interchangeable.
The headband features a battery on the right and left side, opting for a horse’s saddle approach when it comes to weight distribution on your head. The battery is also claimed to last 55 hours with ANC on, which far exceeds the Apple AirPods Max’s 20 hours and Sonos Ace 30 hours, though its not far off the 50 hours claimed by the Dyson Zone. Charge time is 3 hours, but you can get 2.5 hours with ANC in 10 minutes, or 9.5 hours with ANC in 30 minutes.
In terms of controls, the Dyson OnTrac has a power button and a joy stick, the latter of which allows you to control music, adjust volume and access your phone’s voice assistant. To switch between active noise cancellation, transparency mode or off, you simply tap the outside of either ear cup.
Dyson has claimed the OnTrac headphones deliver “best-in-class” active noise cancellation, with noise cancelled 384,000 times per second, reducing up to 40dB. External noise is tracked and reported in real-time through the MyDyson app. That means you’ll be able to see how much noise you have been exposed to, how much dust your Dyson Vis Nav 360 has picked up, and control your Dyson fan in the same place.
Each ear cup has a 40mm speaker driver and the Dyson OnTrac headphones offer a frequency response between 6Hz and 21Hz, which is a wider range than a human ear can hear. It’s said to reveal hidden detail with deep sub-bass and high-end brilliance.
In terms of other specs, the Dyson OnTrac headphones support SBC, AAC and LHDC codecs, there are eight ANC microphones and they weigh 451g, which is heavier than AirPods Max. Based on what we saw in London ahead their launch, the case for the OnTrac headphones is great though, which can’t be said for AirPods Max or Sonos Ace.
The Dyson OnTrac headphones will cost $500 / £500. They will launch in the UK on August 1, 2024. The customisation ear cups and cushions will cost $50 / £50 per pair. You can sign up to hear more on the Dyson website.
