ADT has finally taken the covers off of its long rumored smart security system, with the ADT Plus bringing in elements from Google Nest and Yale to offer a comprehensive DIY solution.
ADT is obviously a major player when it comes to home security but, rather than a pro-install system, ADT Plus is very much a DIY affair, with build your own systems bulked out with smart security devices from Google’s Nest and Yale.
ADT had actually been plugging a gap left by Google discontinuing Nest Secure, by offering a Self Setup system that integrated with the likes of the Nest Cam and the Nest Doorbell.
ADT Plus takes things a step further by actually bundling Nest devices in its build-your-own-system setup.
For example, the top package, dubbed ‘Total Safety’ bundles an indoor Nest Cam, an outdoor Nest Cam, a Nest Cam Floodlight and a Nest Doorbell alongside the new ADT Plus devices such as the base, a motion sensor and some door/window sensors.
This all makes sense as, if you remember, Google stumped up $450 million back in 2020 for a stake in ADT.
However, ADT Plus is not limited to playing nicely with Google; Yale is also part of the package with the Assure Lock 2 being bundled in that top package too.
This allows users to tap into ADT’s Trusted Neighbor feature, which allows users to grant secure and temporary access to their homes.
This is all thanks to Google’s Home APIs, which were announced during its Google I/O developer conference. The idea was to make it easier to develop for the home and have apps working with various devices for a better experience overall.
In the case of ADT Plus, this means using Google’s facial recognition tech to send a message to the Yale lock to unlock if a trusted person comes near and has been granted access; think a neighbor coming to feed a cat or water the plants when the homeowner is on vacation.
This being ADT, there is a professional monitoring option too, starting from $29.99; in fact, it’s compulsory to have a plan in place for the first month of the system setup. After that, you can go 100% DIY if you want though.
ADT Plus is available now, with packages starting from $269. That ‘Total Safety’ bundle I mentioned is north of $1,500. So there’s a wide range of packages depending on your needs and your budget.
The good news is that there’s currently 30% off of all packages, which are all available direct from ADT.
