Should you pick the Pro model of the Battery Video Doorbell or does the standard model suffice?
Estimated reading time: 8 minutes
The Ring Video Doorbell options are vast. There’s not only the choice between battery and wired models, but there are a number of models within each of those installation options too. Ring has a product finder on its website to help you figure out which of the models might be the right one for you, but if you’ve already narrowed it down, we might be able to help.
We’ve covered off how the Ring Battery Video Doorbell Pro compares to the Video Doorbell Plus in a separate feature and we have also covered the new Battery Video Doorbell and how that compares to the Video Doorbell Plus in another feature. Here though, we are looking at how the new Battery Video Doorbell compares to the Battery Video Doorbell Pro.
Ring Battery Video Doorbell vs Ring Battery Doorbell Pro: Price
The new Ring Battery Video Doorbell that was announced in August 2024 will cost $99.99 / £99.99 and it will be available from September 4, 2024. You can pre-order it now and it comes in Satin Nickel or Venetian Bronze colour options.

Ring Battery Video Doorbell vs Battery Video Doorbell Pro: Installation
Both the new Battery Video Doorbell and the Battery Video Doorbell Pro are battery operated, which means they don’t need to be wired in, though both can be if you prefer. There are other hardwired options within Ring’s video doorbell offering as we mentioned however, so if you’re looking to hard wire, you could also consider the Ring Wired Video Doorbell Pro or Ring Video Doorbell Wired, for example.
Back to the Battery Video Doorbell and the Battery Video Doorbell Pro though – that’s why we are here after all. Both should take around five minutes to install, but if you’re timing yourself, add a couple of extra minutes on to that as you will need to attach them to your door or wall, as well as download the app and follow the setup instructions. Installation is a simple experience for either however so you don’t need to choose between them based on that.
Both are designed to operate in temperatures between -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F) and both are weather resistant. You’ll need to ensure you have a minimum upload speed for 2.5 Mbps for the Battery Video Doorbell Pro, while the Battery Video Doorbell asks for a minimum of 2 Mbps to deliver optimal performance. The Battery Video Doorbell Pro supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, while the Battery Video Doorbell is just 2.4GHz.
Ring Battery Video Doorbell vs Battery Video Doorbell Pro: Design
When it comes to design, there are some slight differences between the Ring Battery Video Doorbell and the Ring Battery Video Doorbell Pro. The standard Battery Video Doorbell measures 126.5 x 62 x 23mm (4.98 x 2.44 x 0.91-inches) which makes it slightly smaller than the Battery Video Doorbell Pro that measures 128 x 62 x 28mm (5.1 x 2.4 x 1.1-inches).
They both have a black section at the top housing the camera, a section at the bottom and a button in the middle of that bottom section with an LED ring around it. The button on the Battery Video Doorbell is a little more seamless than the Battery Video Doorbell Pro, but you wouldn’t be able to see that unless you were looking at them side-by-side.
The Battery Video Doorbell comes in Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze colour options, while the Ring Battery Video Doorbell Pro only comes in Satin Nickel. The Pro model is compatible with the interchangeable face plates sold separately however, which the Battery Video Doorbell is not.
The main difference in terms of design between these two models is that the Ring Battery Video Doorbell doesn’t have a quick release battery like the Battery Video Doorbell Pro. You will need to use the included tool to unclip the Battery Video Doorbell from its mount in order to recharge the battery, which will mean the Battery Video Doorbell will not be recording for the duration of the charging time. The Battery Video Doorbell Pro meanwhile, has the quick release battery so if you have a spare battery you can swap them quickly without needing to take the doorbell off the wall or door.
Ring Battery Video Doorbell vs Battery Video Doorbell Pro: Features
When it comes to features, there are a couple of differences between the Battery Video Doorbell Pro and the Battery Video Doorbell Pro, but there are some similarities too. We will start with what they both offer.
Both have two-way audio with noise cancellation so you can talk to anyone at your door through the Ring app and they can talk back. Both also have come with a Head-to-Toe field of view at 150-degree horizontal and 150-degrees vertical, which will allow you to see packages left on your doorstep, for example, and both have color night vision too.
The two video doorbells also have Advanced Motion Detection with Customisable Motion Zones, along with customisable privacy settings and Quick Replies to help you answer the door when you’re busy.
Elsewhere, there is Live View on both so you can see what is happening as it happens through the Ring app, and real-time notifications will appear on your connected devices when the either of these doorbells are pressed or motion is detected. They also both work with Alexa and you will be able to see their feeds on an Echo Show if you have one.
Where these two video doorbells differ is the Battery Video Doorbell Pro has 3D Motion Detection with Bird’s Eye Zones and Bird’s Eye View. It also has Color Pre-Roll and Audio+, neither of which the Battery Video Doorbell has. What that effectively means is that you will be able to see more of your home in the Ring app if you have the Pro model, including where visitors go, and the ability see motion before it is recorded in color. The Battery Video Doorbell Pro also has a higher resolution than the Battery Video Doorbell with 1536p compared to 1440p on the Battery Video Doorbell.
Both these video doorbells offer extra features with a Ring Protect subscription however. You’ll need a Protect subscription if you want to record and capture footage or get person and package alerts. We have an entire separate feature that explains the Protect subscriptions, including how much they cost and what they offer.
Ring Battery Video Doorbell vs Battery Video Doorbell Pro: Which one is right for you?
The video doorbell that is right for you out of these two models will depend on what features are important to you. The Ring Battery Video Doorbell is the cheaper of the two by quite a bit and it offers many of the same features as the Battery Video Doorbell Pro model.
You lose out on some of the more advanced features like 3D Motion Detection with Bird’s Eye Zones and Bird’s Eye View, Color Pre-Roll and Audio+, as well as a higher resolution video feed. You also don’t get the quick release battery design or the option for interchangeable face plates.
Otherwise though, you’ll save money buying the Ring Battery Video Doorbell model and it will still be more than capable at letting you know who is at your door and when.
