Ring Protect is now Ring Home, and there are some new tricks

The Ring Home subscription plans will offer Doorbell Calls, Extended Live View and more, depending on your package

Ring has made some quite big announcements this week. First up, the Ring Protect subscription is changing its name to Ring Home and that will offer three packages comprising of Ring Home Basic, Standard and Premium.

At the moment, and until November 5, the Ring Protect subscription offers Basic and Plus, as well as Pro and Go plans if you are based in the US. Alongside the newly named subscription plans however, Ring also announced four new subscription features.

These new features include Video Preview Alerts, Extended Live View, Continuous Live View and Doorbell Calls. There’s also 24/7 recording coming, which enables wired Ring cameras to record all the time and capture activity outside of your motion zones so you know exactly what is happening around your home.

Video Preview Alerts will allow you to see what has triggered a device’s motion alert without having to open the Ring app. It’s basically an extension of Rich Notifications, adding a short video clip to push notifications to let you see a preview of what has happened and decide what to do.

Extended Live View and Continuous Live View will allow you to watch the Live View of your Ring camera beyond the current 10 minutes. Whether that’s to keep an eye on the kids in the garden while you’re cooking dinner, or check in on your pet, Extending Live View lets you watch for 30 minutes. Continuous Live View allows even longer, but you’ll need the Premium subscription for that – more on that in a second.

Doorbell Calls is the last of the four new features and one that will no doubt be very welcomed. It’s something Arlo has offered on its video doorbells for a while, and it makes sure you don’t miss someone at the door by calling your phone as though you’re getting a video call when the doorbell is pressed. You can answer the call and speak directly to the person who pushed the doorbell through Live View.

In terms of prices and what you get for each subscription plan, the Ring Home plans include Basic, Standard and Premium, as we mentioned. Home Basic is £4.99 / $4.99 a month, Home Standard is £7.99 / $7.99 a month and Home Premium is £15.99 / $15.99 a month. They will roll out from November 5, along with the features mentioned above.

For 24/7 recording, you’ll need a Ring Stick Up Cam, Stick Up Cam Pro, Indoor Camera (2nd Gen) or Pan-Tilt Indoor Camera, as well as a Ring Home Premium plan. Video Preview Alerts will be available with Basic, Standard and Premium plans, while Extended Live View will be available with Standard and Premium plans. Doorbell Calls also need Standard or Premium, while Continuous Live View needs Premium, as mentioned.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
